Thomas Merton (1915-1968), Trappist monk and one of the most significant spiritual influences of the twentieth century, was a prolific writer, an outspoken peace activist, and an ardent supporter of the Civil Rights movement. He rose to international prominence with his classic autobiography The Seven Story Mountain. Unique for his view that Eastern Mysticism and Western religion were complementary, he was a friend to the Dalai Lama.

My Afternoons with Margueritte at Little Art

See the delightful French film MY AFTERNOONS WITH MARGUERITTE, starring Gérard Depardieu and Gisèle Casadesus at Little Art Theatre this week.

Depardieu plays Germain, a nearly illiterate man in his 50's considered to be the village idiot, who takes a walk to the park one day and happens to sit beside Margueritte (Casadesus), a little old lady who is reading excerpts from her novel aloud. Afternoons spent reading aloud on their favorite bench transform their lives and start them both on a new journey. "The larger-than-life actor [Depardieu] is as emblematic of his country as Tom Hanks is of ours, and My Afternoons With Margueritte is his Forrest Gump. Only better," raves the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "French feel-good filmmaking to the max," writes Variety.

Exhibition and workshop by Nikki McClure

Antioch College to host exhibition and workshop by famed papercut artist Nikki McClure

Antioch College will host a solo exhibition by paper crafter Nikki McClure beginning Friday, December 2, in the College’s Herndon Gallery. An opening reception featuring an artist talk will be held from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. An artist workshop, presented in collaboration with the Writing Institute, will follow on Saturday, December 3, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Workshop seating is limited and participants are required to register in advance by e-mailing Sara Black at sblack@antiochcollege.org.

The exhibition, Nikki McClure: Cutting Her Own Path, 1996-2011, premiered this fall at the Museum of Contemporary Craft in Portland, Oregon. Cutting Her Own Path showcases McClure’s unique papercut artwork alongside her popular and better-known calendars, books, and other recent projects.

Based in Olympia, Washington, McClure has spent fifteen years creating compelling narratives by cutting into black paper with an X-Acto knife. Her delicate and sculptural “carved paintings” connect personal experiences to collective memory through a celebration of current and traditional models of self-sufficiency, resourcefulness and participation in community.

She created her first papercut for a self-published book, Apple (1996), and produced her first hand-bound calendar in 1998. Her iconic style of papercut has resonated with a diverse audience and has been featured on snowboards, Patagonia t-shirts, record covers, magazine illustrations, greeting cards, movies, tote bags, Microsoft advertisements, non-profit logos, strangers’ tattoos and even the storm drains in Olympia, Washington.

Nikki McClure: Cutting Her Own Path, 1996-2011 can be viewed 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday through February 15 in the Herndon Gallery on the Antioch College campus.

For more information about the exhibition, contact Sara Black at sblack@antiochollege.org.

Last chance to see "Liar's Club" Comic Book Exhibit

Michael Fleishman (left) at his Opening Reception
on Veteran's Day, November 11

“Liars Club” Comic Book Exhibit Features Greene County World War II Veterans

The last day to see the “Liars Club” exhibit is on Saturday, November 26, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. The month-long exhibit features the book and other works by author/illustrator Michael Fleishman, utilizing a special venue with improved accessibility at 111 Corry Street in Yellow Springs. Copies of the comic book will be available to purchase for $5, with proceeds benefitting the Greene County Council on Aging.

The comic introduces us to a group of vibrant WWII veterans who meet daily for breakfast with tales to tell at a Xenia, Ohio, McDonalds restaurant. Widowers, and almost all in their 90′s, the three “Liars’ Club” veterans have been spending mornings together for about eight years. They joke that maybe 15 percent of their stories are the truth. But Charlie Bath, Earl Ellis, and Jack Newhouse have poignant lessons to share about love, life and liberty.

Other works by Fleishman are also on exhibit. An Associate Professor of Commercial Art at Edison Community College in Piqua and resident of Yellow Springs, Fleishman has also authored six books on illustration and design, including the recent Drawing Inspiration: Visual Artists at Work (Delmar Cengage Learning, 2010).

For more information about the exhibit or to schedule a private viewing, contact the artist at 937-767-7955 or mfleishman@woh.rr.com.

The Greene County Council on Aging is a not-for-profit countywide organization that promotes independence and quality of life for Greene County senior citizens and caregivers.

A very successful Community Thanksgiving!!

Thanks to all the volunteers behind-the-scenes and in front for making the Yellow Springs Community Thanksgiving 2011 such a huge success! We had plenty of turkey, side dishes, coffee, lemonade, and seating for all. Thanks especially to those who volunteered to cook the turkeys!

I've enjoyed attending this wonderful meal in the past and this year I wanted to be part of the crew. It's a fun crew to work with and it changes every year. Everyone is pleasant and we solved lots of little mini-problems without any panic. The afternoon goes super-dooper fast. Before you know it, you're folding up the chairs and putting clean cups away in the cupboard.

This event is made possible by many, many hands and it won't happen next year without your help. We need:

* Turkey cooks
* Coordinators for publicity and facilities
* Help with set up, serving, clean up

If you are willing to help, please e-mail YSIC@earthlink.net

Workshop: Create a Pure Silver Domed Pendant

SPRINGS GALLERY presents—

Artistic Jewelry Workshop with Fine Silver Clay
a Step-by-Step Project for Beginners:
Create a Pure Silver Domed Pendant

Springs Gallery in Yellow Springs, Ohio, is offering a one-day jewelry workshop titled “Create a Pure Silver Domed Pendant,” on Saturday, December 3, 2011, from Noon to 4 PM. All levels are welcome. For questions or to register, visit Springs Gallery at 220 Xenia Avenue, Yellow Springs, OH, 45387, or the gallery site: www.springsgallery.blogspot.com, call 937-409-5047, or email springsgallery@earthlink.net, and on Facebook.

The workshop will be led by Trish Jeffers-Zeh, a Waynesville, Ohio, artist who has been creating and teaching in fine silver clay for 30 years. Jeffers-Zeh’s unique jewelry is represented by a number of local galleries, including Springs Gallery in Yellow Springs, Ohio.

Trish Jeffers-Zeh will share her knowledge of this exciting and versatile medium. Students will create a simple, domed pendant using stamps and molds for textural designs. The material fires with a torch or in a kiln for 30 minutes, so students can take home their creation the same day.

The workshop fee is $50, payable with advance registration. A separate material and supply fee of $40 is payable to the instructor at the class. This fee includes 10 grams of silver clay, use of tools, use of silver syringe and paste, and supplies for firing and finishing. Everything is provided to complete the pendant; all you need to do is add a chain. Additional clay, stones, leather cords and supplies will be available for purchase in class. Bring magnifying glasses if you need them to see small detail work.

Registrations for the workshop are now being accepted. Forms are available in Springs Gallery and on the gallery site. Minimum participant age is 12. Minimum class size is 6. On the day of the class, students must present a paid receipt to participate. The deadline for cancellations with refund is Sunday, November 27. Free parking is available behind Kings Yard (off Walnut Street) and on surrounding streets.

The gallery's current hours are Wednesday through Sunday, Noon to 7 PM. For more information call 937-409-5047, email springsgallery@earthlink.net, or visit www.springsgallery.blogspot.com.

What's up at the hardware store?

I'm realizing a lifelong dream to be a window dresser and having a great time of it. Inspired by childhood trips into Chicago to see the elaborate holiday window displays at Marshall Fields and other department stores, I'm trying my hand at this creative outlet. There are other local "elves" in town who will be dressing up other business windows as well. I hope to have my window ready in time for Thanksgiving.

It's more challenging than you would think...maneuvering around a progressively tighter space without knocking something over...figuring out how and when to add certain elements that become more difficult to add or change as the process continues...incorporating items supplied by Kathy, the owner of the hardware store, along with some items of my own...the motivation to do this "on a dime" and use recycled and repurposed items...jumping up and down on a ledge all day and then running around outside to peek in through a peephole and aesthetically assess the placement of a particular item, etc.

There has been talk of turning this into a coordinated village event with participating stores and individuals, comparable to the hugely successful Yelloween Scarecrow Project. Just another creative way to bring people to our town and stimulate our economy while adding art in places you wouldn't typically expect.

Stay tuned to this blog for more photos...

Village Vignettes

As I was running errands on Saturday, I stopped to take a picture of these two boys exercising their creative expression. I noticed they were very respectful and mindful of the cars, listening and watching to get out of their way and then running back to continue with their art. It was fun to watch. They could have picked a quieter, less-traveled piece of pavement as their canvas with fewer interruptions but in choosing a well-used road, more people could enjoy the artwork.

Thanks for beautifying our neighborhood, guys!

Two free documentaries this week at Little Art

The Ister
Tuesday, November 22 -  6 p.m.

Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Antioch College, Lewis Trelawny-Cassity has assigned a screening of THE ISTER as part of his Global Seminar on water. The public is invited to attend the screening for free and to participate in a discussion following the film.

Documentary. 189 minutes. There will be an INTERMISSION halfway through. Not Rated. 2005.

In 1942, at the height of World War II, Martin Heidegger, the most influential philosopher of the twentieth century, delivered a series of lectures on The Ister, Friedrich Hölderlin’s poem about the Danube River.

Heidegger had achieved worldwide fame in 1927 for his philosophical magnum opus, Being and Time. In 1933, Heidegger embraced the National Socialist ‘revolution,’ becoming rector of Freiburg University. His inaugural address culminated in “Heil Hitler!” After clashing with the Nazi bureaucracy, however, he resigned the rectorate in 1934.

Eight years later, as the tide of the war was turning against Germany, Heidegger spent the summer semester lecturing on the poetry of Friedrich Hölderlin. His lectures directly addressed the political, cultural and military chaos facing Germany and the world in 1942.

THE ISTER takes up some of the most challenging paths in Heidegger’s thought, as we journey from the mouth of the Danube River in Romania to its source in the Black Forest. However controversial Heidegger remains, his thought remains alive in the work of some of the most remarkable thinkers and artists working today, four of whom discuss the contemporary social relevance of Heidegger, including Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe, Jean-Luc Nancy, Bernard Stiegler, and filmmaker Hans-Jürgen Syberberg.

THE ISTER invites the viewer to participate in some of the most provocative questions facing Europe and the world today.

1. We will premier Asa Mader's short film A Round 13, about Miami Valley Pottery's 13th Firing.

2. Exciting look at the Stained Glass Show (before they fly off the walls).

3. Winds Bar will be open. Enjoy Fancy Cheeses from DLM, and Farzaneh and Farideh's Famous Hummous and Tea from the Golden Samovar.

This reception is a great opportunity to view the plates and platters on the walls. The beautiful colors of glass jump off the walls, and combined with glazes, and carved patterns into clay, offer new and exciting works.

Advisor to Mr. Sine: Walter Rhodes

The Way is an inspirational story about family, friends, and the challenges of navigating a complicated world. Martin Sheen plays Tom, an American doctor who comes to France to collect the remains of his adult son (played by Emilio Estevez), who died while walking the Camino de Santiago, also known as The Way of Saint James. Rather than return home, Tom decides to embark on the historical pilgrimage to honor his son's desire to finish the journey. Inexperienced as a trekker, Tom soon discovers that he will not be alone on this journey.

Holiday Gift Gallery and more for Third Friday Fling

Tonight is Third Friday Fling at Village Artisans, 100 Corry Street, 6-9 p.m. Come check out their holiday gift gallery in the lobby.

I have a suggestion for a perfect gift for villagers and former residents --- Kathy Verner Moulton's "My Town: The Muses of a Not So Vocal Local". Each illustration is a loving tribute to a Yellow Springs building or business. Each time you see the illustration you will see something in it you hadn't seen before. Not only are the illustrations beautifully created, they also capture the charm and uniqueness of our village in a very clever way. The book is available for purchase every day at Village Artisans and will also be available at the Glen Helen Nature Art & Crafts Show this weekend.
