Open Mic for Peace & Love

Will be hosted by musician and Mills Lawn School principal Matt Housh on
Sunday, February 12, from 3-5 PM
in a 2nd floor room above the Winds Cafe on Xenia Avenue.
Community members are welcome to share words, songs, poems, prayer, etc. that reflect personal thoughts, concerns or hopes about peace and/or love. Scheduled to appear are representatives from the local Quaker organization, Bashir Ahmed from the Dayton Peace Museum, and poets Maria and John Booth.
Attendees of the Open Mic can also visit the “John & Yoko Memorial Love-In” in the same location, which honors the couple’s 1969 non-violent events that protested war and promoted peace. John and Yoko will be portrayed by Antioch College students Adam Abraham and Maisie Taibbi.
Both activities are part of the Yellow Springs Experience Love-In, February 10-12, a weekend of arts and cultural activities coordinated by the Yellow Springs Arts Council. For more information, visit www.yellow-springs-experience.org.

Currently Exhibiting: Village of Yellow Springs Permanent Collection

Textile Art by Kathy Moulton
Nancy Mellon (and helpers Jafabrit and Joanne Mckee) hung the Permanent Collection at the John Bryan Community Gallery yesterday. Hanging wasn't fun, but seeing all the art was. Hope you can get a chance to visit and enjoy it yourself.
Mom's Gift by Sharon Mohler
"On Valentines day the family goes to buy mom a heart shaped box of chocolates. The kids can't wait for it to be opened. Mom always gets the ones with holes punched in the bottom that no one else wanted."

Ohio Silver

I just recently visited  Ohio Silver's  Facebook Page and album and I'm drooling at their gorgeous jewelry. With my current obsession with anything turquoise, I think I'm going to have to visit their store very SOON.

Recycled Art At Village Artisans

"Totally Trashed"
by Sondy Kai for Mary Kleismit

I saw this at the Village Artisans this morning and was totally taken by it. It's "99.9% crocheted post consumer waste" and wonderful to explore close up.
Reception for The Mysteries of the Heart Show is  February 17, 2012 from 7:00-9:00 PM at 100 Corry Street. More info here.

Yellow Springs In the News

Dayton City Paper

Reading the history of the town in the YS News articles  back in mid 1800's it was a destination for the water cure and brought many a tourist to enjoy the healing waters and "romantic scenery". Prior to that, it was a destination for the Shawnee and other tribes.
It seems the town has a full history of attracting visitors for one reason or another.

Studio Shots: Bette Kelley

I love visiting friends studios. Always something to explore and Bette Kelley's is a FEAST for the eyes and imagination. Dolls everywhere, and this one really caught my attention.

Hand embroidered doll from Russia. Story is Bette was NOT leaving Russia without it ;)
I don't blame her.

Back in the Day

1974 to be precise
Karen Russell and I love thrifting and I found this magazine and grabbed it before she could (we LOVE vintage craft mags). As I was perusing the back pages the words Yellow Springs jumped out at me :)
It was a lovely surprise :)

If anyone is interested in purchasing this issue, they are available on amazon.

Yellow Springs Strings was originally owned by Denny Hurowitz and Marina Thompson (antioch alumni) and was located in Goes Station. They sold the business to Corinne Whitesell in 1975 and she relocated it to King's Yard in town.

Sunrise Cafe new on the menu and I have to say

YUM!
ON THE MENU
It's always hard to choose a favourite around town (too many wonderful choices), but currently I've been enjoying the new item on the Sunrise Cafe menu, Tandoori Curried Chicken, Goat Cheese and Roasted Pepper Quesadilla.

ON THE WALLS
I won't fib, it's fun going to place where my daughter has her art on the walls, but I am not too biased it seems as her work has proved popular with staff and customers :)

Snow Flakes

Glen Helen photo by c.bayrak

Snow flakes.
I counted till they danced so
Their slippers leaped the town,
And then I took a pencil
To note the rebels down.
And then they grew so jolly
I did resign the prig,
And ten of my once stately toes
Are marshalled for a jig!
