Local Exhibits: Jafagirls visit Herndon Gallery

It was really difficult to choose a favourite piece because most of the exhibit is just FABulous on so many levels.  Nancy chose Emily's painting, which is HUGE (about 7ft), because of the gorgeous colours, composition and textures.

I was charmed by Kelly Medford's traditional style oil paintings, particularly this one.

They are quite small oils on panel and traditionally framed and very intimate, but what I liked about this one is the modern context.

If you haven't had a chance to visit the Herndon please do, it's a great space and this is a really an inspiring beautiful exhibit.

Arts Weekend Oct. 15-17

The weekend of Friday-Sunday, Oct. 15-17, will be a great time to invite friends and family to town to sample all that is Yellow Springs.

Friday is the semi-annual Art Stroll, 6-9 p.m. Many shops and galleries in town will be open late with galleries featuring artist receptions. Music, food, and wine will be available for villagers and guests as they stroll through the downtown area.

Information about all the events is available online at: Yellow Springs Arts Blog (http://ysarts.blogspot.com), A Yellow Springs Blog (http://ayellowspringsblog.blogspot.com), Yellow Springs News (http://www.ysnews.com), and Yellow Springs Chamber of Commerce (http://www.yschamber.org).

Friday highlights include:

Sam Eckenrode and her daughter, Miriam, will hold a Grand Opening, 6-9 p.m., for the Eddie Eckenrode Gallery to honor their beloved husband and father who passed away this summer. An exhibition of Eddie’s artwork will be displayed in the newly rededicated gallery located in Sam & Eddie’s Open Books, 232 Xenia Avenue. The Grand Opening is particularly appropriate because Eddie Eckenrode was instrumental in helping Sam and villagers Jocelyn Robinson and Behrle Hubbuch to create the Art Stroll from its beginning in 1996.

“would you, could you” In A Frame, located at 113 Corry Street, will host an Opening Reception, 6-9 p.m., for “Stitch Gasp!” by local multimedia artist (and Yellow Springs Arts Blog blogger) Corrine Bayraktaroglu. The exhibit of stitched art is intended to elicit gasps of wonder or horror.

The new YSAC Gallery presents an Opening Reception of “Out of My Box: An Exhibition of Extreme Quilting” from 6-9 p.m., featuring multimedia artist Karen Russell. Guest sculptor Sharon Mohler is sharing the exhibit. The gallery is located at 309 Xenia Ave. The two artists met for the first time in a shared exhibit last month and had so much fun they asked to do it again. Last month's display will be swapped with a gallery full of new art.

Village Artisans of Yellow Springs presents a Gallery Opening of “Dare 2B Square,” 6-9 p.m., featuring the work (all on 12”x12” canvas) of over 30 artists. Enjoy live music and refreshments at the gallery at 100 Corry Street.

Wine tasting and Grace Adele and Her Grand Band at Emporium, 233 Xenia Avenue.

"Extreme Quilting" at YSAC Gallery Oct. 15

The Yellow Springs Arts Council presents “Out of My Box: An Exhibition of Extreme Quilting,” featuring the work of multimedia artist Karen Russell. Sharing the exhibit will be folk artist Sharon Mohler.

The two artists are collaborating on this second exhibit (both will be displaying new work) due to the serendipitous synergy they discovered sharing last month’s exhibit. An opening reception will be held at the YSAC Gallery, 309 Xenia Ave., on Friday, October 15, 6-9 p.m. as part of the Yellow Springs Art Stroll and as a kick-off to Third Weekend Fling in the Springs.

Gallery hours and Origami box demonstrations will be Saturdays, 12-4 p.m., Oct. 16, 23, 30 and Nov. 6 and 13. For more information, contact Karen Russell at sleepymole@sbcglobal.net
