Thomas Merton (1915-1968), Trappist monk and one of the most significant spiritual influences of the twentieth century, was a prolific writer, an outspoken peace activist, and an ardent supporter of the Civil Rights movement. He rose to international prominence with his classic autobiography The Seven Story Mountain. Unique for his view that Eastern Mysticism and Western religion were complementary, he was a friend to the Dalai Lama.
