Village Vignette's: Magic of Color

I ♥ walking around the Art Park at the corner of Corry & Dayton Street. The gardens, the flowers are glorious.I know some weren't keen on the colours of the Corry Street Shops, but they are so cheerful (reminds me of some the buildingsI saw  in Holland). Add to that the painted benches, odd bits of art-peeps in the park art, the yarnbombing, and then of course the shops/galleries around it.

If you would like to keep up with events in the art park, check in with the Dayton Street Alliance FB page, the Chamber of Commerce calendar website, or google blog search for art park yellow springs.

Steel Painting Workshops in August and September

Springs Gallery Presents – Workshops with Steel Painter Mike Elsass

Springs Gallery, a fine art/fine craft gallery in Yellow Springs, Ohio, is offering two opportunities for a hands-on painting workshop with Dayton artist Mike Elsass. Elsass, who paints on rusted steel, will be doing his creative, spontaneous painting, along with students, on Wednesday, August 31, 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm, and on Thursday, September 15, 4 pm – 7 pm. Students will paint on King’s Yard, outside of Springs Gallery, 220 Xenia Avenue in Yellow Springs.

The fee for each workshop is $70.00; all materials will be provided. Students may take one workshop or both, and will be able to take home a finished work of their own creation for each session. For questions, or to register, please call Springs Gallery at 937-767-1766, or email: springsgallery@earthlink.net.

Registration forms are available on the Springs Gallery site at www.springsgallery.blogspot.com, and at Springs Gallery during business hours: Wednesday through Sunday, Noon to 7 pm. Free parking is available in two lots on the west end of King’s Yard off Walnut Street, and on surrounding streets.

Bio Info.:
Mike Elsass studied for years under nationally renowned Dayton steel painter Roger Sayre, whom he considers his mentor. Sayre showed Elsass the possibilities of steel as a surface for acrylic and urged him to experiment. Elsass explores the medium by sanding and rusting sheets of metal in search of new and different textures and applies multiple layers of paint and shiny or opaque finishes. In the aging of the metals and its imperfections, Elsass sees a mirror of the human condition. The fast-drying quality of the acrylics allows him to work with motivation and speed on several pieces at a time, expressing, as in a musical crescendo, his spontaneity and deep passion for life.

Elsass has done instruction and on-location painting throughout the U.S. and Canada. His work is in several corporate and private collections. Elsass is also currently represented by several fine art galleries throughout the West, South and Midwest, including Springs Gallery in Yellow Springs.

"Bluesdaddy" needs a DRUMMER!

This is going to change someone's life.

Nerak Roth Patterson posted this on Facebook just a few minutes ago.

"DRUMMER NEEDED!!! Able to road tour, no drama, ego, drugs, or outta control drinking; must have your own vehicle...serious inquiries only! Practice schedule is Tuesday's from 7-9 p.m. If interested please send me a personal note, DO NOT POST!!! Thanks....Nerak"

Find Nerak Roth Patterson on Facebook.

Here's a video of one of his band's performances:

Tell your DRUMMER FRIENDS NOW! This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for some lucky drummer.

Not your parent's block party!

I’ve been so impressed the last few years with the Community-Wide Block Party effort sponsored by the Yellow Springs Human Relations Commission. It has not only been a lot of fun but it has been instrumental in helping me and other neighbors get to know one another. It’s not that complete strangers become fast friends in an afternoon (although I’m sure that has happened) but it definitely proves to be a wonderful soil for the seeds of friendship and good neighborship to blossom.

The other aspect I like about it is the creativity and the individual personality that emerges in each block party. Because I’ve videotaped a lot of these block parties in the past, I’ve had a chance to see that creativity play out at each site. In the video, you’ll see that the Davis Street Block party had the added benefit of special musical guest and Emporium pianist Mark DeLozier. Last year the Stafford Street Block Party recreated an entire livingroom in the middle of the street.

I know there’s a certain amount of work involved but it helps tremendously if everyone can do one thing. I like dropping invites in everyone’s mailbox but I don’t like creating the invites. I put that out on e-mail and bam! A neighbor offered to do that part. I like that there’s a certain amount of pre-planning and then there’s a magical quality to the spontaneity of what people bring and how the day turns out.

There’s a meeting at the library today, Saturday, at 3:30 for people to learn more about this effort. Contact person is Joan Chappelle at 767-7056.

I guarantee you will get back much more than you put in.

Art on the Lawn to feature four-legged artist

What: Art on the Lawn (sponsored by Village Artisans)
Where: Under the shade trees at Mills Lawn Elementary
200 S. Walnut St., Yellow Springs
When: Saturday, August 13, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Cost: Free

In many ways, Mozart Dane is your typical artist -- he can only paint when the mood strikes him, prefers to work in his own studio, and requires quiet to be creative. But Mozart, or “Mo” as he is known to his friends, differs from other artists in one important way -- he is a dog.

As the “Featured Artist” in this year’s 28th Annual Art on the Lawn in Yellow Springs, Mo will personally present his abstract masterpieces for sale to the public. All sales will benefit his favorite charity, Harlequin Haven Great Dane Rescue, www.hhdane.org, the group that rescued him, and for whom he has become a dedicated “spokesdog” against puppy mills, pet stores, and homeless dogs. Mozart will join around 100 other juried artists from Ohio and beyond -- jewelers, painters, ceramists, photographers, fabric artists, woodworkers, metalworkers, calligraphers, and more -- under the shade trees of Mills Lawn Elementary, in the heart of beautiful Yellow Springs.

Mo’s paintings, along with artwork from human artists, will also be featured in Village Artisan’s “Dog Daze of Summer” show for the entire month of August. The public is invited to a reception during the village-wide Third Friday Fling in the Springs, Friday, August 19, 6-9 p.m. (Mo will try to attend, but is not sure of his schedule.) Village Artisans is located at 100 Corry Street (corner of Dayton and Corry Streets), Yellow Springs.

Support the Yarn Graffiti Documentary!!

Okay. This can get a little confusing.

The above video is an excerpt from a work-in-progress documentary by a woman named Sarah Gonzalez. The video is titled "Yarn Graffiti Documentary". If you look carefully, you can spot two works by our own Jafagirls Nancy and Corrine that are here in YS ("The Queen of Hearts" tree and "The Snowflake Tree") and also one that Corrine did in Ann Arbor, MI. Back in June, Sarah put out the call to filmmakers everywhere to videotape any yarnbombing activities that took place on International Yarnbombing Day (June 11), which I did. You can see my video at the bottom of this post.

Sarah needs contributions to finish her documentary. Even small amounts like $10 or $20 are greatly appreciated. I donated this morning. You can find out more about that by clicking here.

She also has a blog that you can follow here.

It's possible that footage from my sweet little video will end up in Sarah's documentary. (Wouldn't that be cool?) But I'm being realistic. After all, she received videos from all over the world. Also, it'd be great if Yellow Springs was chosen as a place to screen her finished documentary. I think if Yellow Springers united and all gave a goodly-sized donation, we'd have a good chance of getting a screening. I mean, Jafagirls Nancy Mellon and Corrine Bayraktaroglu have made quite a name for themselves and for the town of Yellow Springs with the Knit Knot Tree (and other knit graffiti). They're celebrities in the world of yarnbombing so we're not exactly invisible.

Anyways, I don't want people to be confused about who is asking for money. If you've got money you're just dying to throw at something, I'd love to take it ;-) but this post is specifically to get out the word about Sarah Gonzalez and her Yarn Graffiti Documentary and I hope you'll consider donating to her cause so she can finish her documentary.

Here's the video I submitted to Sarah back in June. Enjoy!

Glenwood Springs, Colo. wins as Most Fun Town

The good news and the bad news.

It was just announced that our sweet little town lost out to Glenwood Springs, Colo. for the position of Most Fun Town in the Rand McNally 2011 Road Rally.

The good news is that there's a video I somehow missed back from July 2 that will remind folks of the fun time we had with TravelingJules and Traveling Joan (Juliana and Joan Broste) and their Rand McNally hosts Amanda Pflugrad and Gary Hurt. We'll always know that in their hearts, WE were their favorites.

Click here to see the photos and read the wonderful reviews of our town that put us in the running.

Click here to read about Juliana and Joan's blog adventure.

I definitely think we gave ALL the competition a run for their money.

Free Shakespeare! perform A Midsummer Night's Dream this weekend

Free Shakespeare! perform A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Friday-Sunday, July 22-24, Antioch Amphitheatre, 7 pm

Free Shakespeare! is a traveling community of artists. Our goal is to create an event where people can rediscover the power and beauty of language and art. This very casual evening will include an art exhibition accompanied by live music followed by a free performance of one of Shakespeare’s plays.

The traveling theatre troupe is no longer a thing of the past. Free Shakespeare! is bringing a summertime dose of art, music, and theatre to the Miami Valley. Community artists will come together this summer in four area parks to share their work.

Our community needs this event. The current economy has taken its toll on every level of society. When money dries up, the first programs to be effected are athletic and artistic endeavors. To keep pace, these programs must institute “pay to play” policies, putting further strain on the families who need these options the most. Free Shakespeare! will make these cultural opportunities more accessible. By bringing art directly to communities, free of charge, we make it simpler for people to experience it. Simply show up. That is all we ask.

Free Shakespeare! is dedicated to liberating the works of William Shakespeare and exposing his cause to the world.

Cause? What cause?

Shakespeare’s plays deal with universal themes relevant to humanity and the world we live in. From joy, love, and redemption to greed, lust, and corruption, his work runs the gamut of human experience. Unfortunately, his work is widely regarded as archaic, irrelevant, and inaccessible. We will present his plays in a fashion that is interactive and easy to follow. For ninety minutes, the audience will be a vital participant in the story as it unfolds. They will leave the park with a new perspective on art and its capacity for change.

As a society, our language skills are on the decline. The prevalence of texting, instant messaging, and “tweeting” have forced us to communicate in smaller and smaller doses. Words are shortened to letters; vowels are regarded as unnecessary; the only thing that matters is if the message can be contained to 140 characters or less. This has a debilitating effect on our linguistic capabilities. But all is not lost.

As a community, we can wage war on the linguistic apathy running rampant throughout our nation. Presenting the works of William Shakespeare is one step we can take. By simply exposing people to his work we are taking dramatic action to begin correcting this problem. References to Shakespeare and his work abound throughout popular culture. He coined over 3,000 words and phrases, many of which are commonplace today. People deserve to know where their language comes from. We must cultivate an appreciation and respect for language before it dies out. Language gives us voice; without it, we have none.

Adaptation, Integration and the Arts – Call for Classrooms & Teaching Artists

VSA Ohio, the state organization on arts and disability, is pleased to invite applications from experienced Teaching Artists in Ohio to support the arts residency program, Adaptation, Integration, and the Arts (AIA).

Funded by the Ohio Department of Education, AIA provides arts education opportunities to classrooms inclusive of students with and without disabilities. Teaching artists will work with educators to integrate the arts into other subject areas to enhance teaching and learning.

VSA Ohio provides professional development to artists and educators throughout the year on topics such as academic content standards and strategies for implementing Universal Design for Learning. However, Adaptation, Integration, and the Arts is not an artist training program and experience as a teaching artist is required. Experience must include mastery of an art form, work with students with and without disabilities, and development of arts-integrated lesson plans that align with Ohio's Academic Content Standards.

Free lecture tonite: Global Predictions for 2012

Astrologer and new EdenWorld practitioner Josh Hayward will give a free lecture tonite on his global predictions for 2012 and beyond using planetary alignments. The talk takes place at 7 p.m. at EdenWorld, 253 Xenia Avenue.

According to the feature article by Megan Bachman in last week's YS News, "'The awakening of the divine feminine, the collapse of the structures of religion and government, and a re-birth of spiritual healing are some major world changes in store as the planets Pluto and Uranus square off, Neptune enters Pisces and the sun at equinox precesses into Aquarius over the next few years,' Hayward said."

Beginning in August, Hayward and his partner, Esther Lail, a clairvoyant, will offer a series of six-week courses on astrology, tarot and psychic tools. The three in-depth courses will run from the first week of August to the second week of September. "Hayward will teach astrology on Tuesdays and tarot on Thursdays, while Lail's psychic tools course will be on Wednesdays. All run from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at EdenWorld and cost $150," according to the article.

For more information, contact Hayward at jchiron@yahoo.com or (937) 767-1536.

Tie-dye cupcakes at Cirque Carnival

Victoria Roe of Three Leee Cupcakery is currently working on tie-dye cupcakes that will be available at her booth at Cirque Carnival. A photo isn't available yet so this will have to provide the mouth-watering inspiration until then.

Meanwhile, there are two great articles about all our weekend events in the Dayton City Paper. One of the articles is by Yellow Springs own Lara Donnelly.

YSKP's "The Cotton Club"

This summer the Yellow Springs Kids Playhouse presents our 16th season of original theater by youth for all ages.

The Cotton Club revisits the famous nightclub in New York City during the time of prohibition. While the club featured many of the greatest African American entertainers of the era, such as Fletcher Henderson, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Bessie Smith, Cab Calloway, The Nicholas Brothers, Ella Fitzgerald, Fats Waller, Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Nat King Cole, Billie Holiday and Ethel Waters, it also gave birth to contemporary notions of celebrity, press agents and the “red carpet”.

This original musical presents a cast of colorful characters based on the famous – and sometimes infamous – milieu of politicians, big spenders, boxers, stars, gangsters and gold diggers. In the YSKP’s contemporary portrayal of The Cotton Club, patrons sip cow juice as intrigue unfolds, flappers dance and the band plays on. This entertaining show for all ages uses both original songs and classic jazz tunes as the story follows an afternoon, evening and night of the people who work, perform and play in the most famous scene of the Jazz Age.

The Cotton Club is written and directed by John Fleming with original music composed by Neal Kirkwood. It will be performed by an all youth cast and feature a youth jazz ensemble. Performances take place in the Antioch Amphitheater at 7:30pm on July 7, 8, 9, 10, 14, 16 and 17.

NOTE: The cast from “The Cotton Club” will be performing songs from the show on Friday, July 15 on Dayton St. in Yellow Springs, from 7:30-8:45 p.m. at the Main Stage near Corner Cone as part of the 2nd Annual Cirque Carnival.

Information about The Cotton Club and the YSKP 2011 Summer Program, and directions to The Playhouse, can be found by visiting www.yskp.org or calling 767-7800.

Local sculptor featured at 2011 Origins Game Fair

Leviathans' Grenouille-class Destroyer model

This 2-foot-long model was created by local sculptor Behrle Hubbuch and was on display in the Catalyst Game Labs booth at the 2011 Origins Game Fair in June.

From Behrle Hubbuch:

The ship in the video posted on Facebook was built for a gaming company named Catalyst Game Labs. It and another larger ship, 4' in length that is still under construction, were commissioned as part of their booth display used at various gaming conventions called "Cons". There are several "Cons" throughout the country that focus on different aspects of the gaming, comic book, Science Fiction and other hobby industries. Origins takes place in Columbus Ohio usually in June. The two ships I am building will be on display together for the first time at Gen Con in Indianapolis in mid August. The plan for both ships is to have the port holes and bridge windows lit from within and for smoke to vent from the smoke stacks. I will be finished building the second ship the Leviathan in about two weeks. Both ships are built from plastic stock, found objects, and things my wife has been trying to throw away for years. ;) The url's for Origins and Gen Con are http://www.originsgamefair.com/ and http://www.gencon.com/.

Call to all dance enthusiasts

This weekend will be filled with lots of dancing opportunities---for both watchers and participants.

On Friday night, July 15, Jill Becker will present an improvised performance from 6:30-7 p.m. as part of Cirque Carnival in the ring at the intersection of Corry and Dayton Streets with dancers Tricia Gelmini and Elise Yaskoff (Yellow Springs) and Colleen Leonardi and Coco Loupe (Columbus). The dancers will explore movement structures or scores, akin to the rules of a game, along with musician Neal Kirkwood (New York) on accordion. Neal is in Yellow Springs as Musical Director of YSKP's The Cotton Club. All of the highly trained performers are life long improvisers. This will be the first time that they have worked together as a group. Magic could happen!!

To learn about the other dance options, click here to read Nancy Mellon's great article on daytonmostmetro.com.
