She ain't no Picasso BUT

Le RĂªve by Picasso
People see what they want to see, but I never saw IT for YEARS until someone pointed IT out to me regarding Le Reve. And it seems the same happened with the controversial painting painting below by jafagirl Nancy Mellon in the "women's voices out loud" exhibit.
For many people IT had to be pointed out.  How obscene is a painting if IT isn't that obvious and has to be pointed out or one has to search for IT.  If someone hadn't told you it had an IT in it, would you really have thought IT was obvious and fit the legal definition of obscene in this painting with a lot of odd looking little creatures in it?

"The Supreme Court has articulated a more precise terminology, making it clear that nudity alone does not make an image obscene."
*Under Miller v. California, a work may be adjudged "obscene" only if it meets all of the following criteria:
  • the average person, applying contemporary community standards, would find that the work, taken as a whole, appeals to the prurient interest (exciting lustful thoughts)
  • the work depicts or describes, in a patently offensive way, sexual conduct specifically defined by the applicable state law
  • the work, taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value

Selwa's Hairstyling Salon and tiny tiny tiny knitted socks

Went to Selwa's to have my hair trimmed and I was just fascinated with her tiny hand knitted sock earrings she had on display.
The Christmas socks were even more detailed with hand felted pom poms.

So if you're needing a haircut, or want to check out her knitted sock earrings, here is Selwa's Hairstyling FB Page

Political Art relevant to Current Issues

Stephen Rumbaugh's painting is part of the Yellow Springs Arts Council's Permanent Collection. In February 2012 the curator of the collection Nancy Mellon, and helpers Joanne Mckee and myself spent more than 5 hours installing the collection in the Bryan Center Community Gallery. The next day a village employee  took down Steve's painting and moved it because she found it disturbing and offensive. Nancy was not informed or contacted and only found out about it when she went into the gallery  to do some more work on the collection. In consideration of the employees feelings it was decided to leave it where the employee had rehung it.  When the collection was taken down to make room for the "women's voices out loud" exhibit there was the suggestion Steve's painting NOT be rehung.  That was NOT an option.  Because of complaints of that piece, and several pieces in the "women's voices out loud" exhibit the village council passed a motion to have no more exhibits until a public art policy is established. There was no reason the permanent collection could not have been rehung as it had NO NUDES. When this country is having a national debate about the nra's backed "stand your ground" law and the horrific killing of an innocent young man Trayvon Martin, it seems as Steven said,(in the Yellow Springs News article "Nudes reveal arts controversy" by Megan Bachman) "even more relevant today and that it's important that it hang in a public space."

Arts Council Needs YOUR Support

The Yellow Springs Arts Council has been operating a Multi-Arts Gallery since 2008.
Supported by grant funding, the Gallery operation is one of our signature programs
(in addition to Yellow Springs Experience events).
It is a social purpose enterprise, encouraging regional artists to fulfill their visions
and enhance professional skills through the exhibition/performance process.

Thanks to grant funding for this year, we have moved to a
wheelchair-accessible first floor location at 111 Corry Street
which will officially open on Friday, April 20.
We're excited that it offers a gallery exhibition area,
as well as a small performance space!

BUT...
We need your help to maintain our Gallery beyond 2012!

Our Matching Rent Campaign Goal is $9000 per year...or $750 per month.
A donation has already been received for January 2013's rent!
Will you help us pay the rent for the rest of 2013
with a tax-deductible donation?

Ditto for 2014?

You can donate online:

Tree Beads

By Susan Gartner who said, "The beads are upcycled from a public art project that was in front of the Post Office last year. The string was getting weird and I was afraid all those beautiful beads would fall down and get lost or stepped on. "

Sue Brezine Retrospective

  AT
VILLAGE ARTISANS GALLERY
Sue Brezine brings "March Mindfulness" to the Village Artisans Event Gallery, 100 Corry Street in Yellow Springs, March 1 - 31. Inspired by Fredrick Fanck's "Zen of Seeing," Sue presents a retrospective of her work "to the viewer's quiet place of recognition" in watercolors, pastels and abstract acrylics.

Sue is a native Daytonian, and as a child, she studied at the Dayton Art Institute. Her teaching career began after a trip to the University of  California, Long Beach to study with Betty Edwards, author of "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain."  Sue taught this method at Riverbend Art Center, Dayton, Kettering Adult School, and many other venues, and these classes let to the creation of the workshop, "Sketching Your Spirit," which  has been presented to countless religious and professional organizations over the years.

Drawing led to painting in watercolor, and she has received numerous awards for her work, including recognition from the Western Ohio Watrcolor Society and "The Artist Magazine."  Sue is presently president of Fairborn Art Association, a member of Dayton Society of Painters and Sculptors, and past president of Western Ohio Watercolor Society.  After a long and successful career of teaching, Sue is retired, except for membership in the Village Artisans in Yellow Springs. "Thank goodness artist never need to really retire," she says.

You may view her paintings at Village Artisans or call 937-767-9457 for further information.
A reception for Sue will be held at the Village Artisans Event Gallery on Friday, March 16, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.
