Artoberfest Coming! Oct. 16

FIRST ANNUAL ARTOBERFEST
Reap the fruits of fall culture at the first annual Yellow Springs Artoberfest on Saturday, October 16th from 5 to 10 pm. The Yellow Springs Arts Council (YSAC) plans its new fundraiser as a celebration of music, beer, food, wine and the art of the stein. Artoberfest will be held at the Barr property on the corner of Limestone and Xenia Ave, next to YSAC’s new home in Alan MacBeth’s building.

“FINEST STEIN” CONTEST INFO
Enter your favorite beer container in the “Finest Stein” contest to be judged by local artists and celebrities between 7 and 8 pm. Seasonal beers, wine and food will be available and live bands will perform. Brewing and other food and drink demonstrations are planned. After completing the Yellow Springs Artist Studio Tour Saturday afternoon, art lovers can finish their trip at Artoberfest as the perfect end to a day of cultural adventure.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the gate. Advanced tickets can be purchased at the YSAC Street Fair booth or online at www.yellow-springs-experience.org.

Play with clay this Saturday, 1-3 p.m.

Local sculptor Sharon Mohler is the featured artist currently on exhibit at the Yellow Springs Arts Council Gallery, 309 Xenia Avenue. Sharon will be holding informal Sculpey workshops at the gallery from 1-3 p.m. on Saturdays, Oct. 2 and 9. Sculpey is a type of polymer clay that can be molded and then hardened in a conventional oven. Villagers and visitors are invited to come and play with the clay and learn how to create flowers, dollhouse food, and beads. Come see the exhibit (which includes work by local fabric artist Karen Russell) and stay to play. For more information, contact Sharon at smmart937@att.net.

The Art of Presentation

And at the Winds, where a fireplace crackles, art displayed the walls (currently Tom Hawley), one can get such seasonal fare as Pumpkin Squash Lasagne that is a feast for the eyes and the palate.  As they describe it: "A variety of locally grown squashes are roasted, scooped and mashed, layered with fresh pasta sheets and cheeses, and baked until bubbly. A thick square is cut and drizzled with roasted shallot cream and fresh sage oil. Served with dressed greens."  YUM!

Okay! you came for Street Fair, it's getting late, you're hungry and all those food vendors are packing up to go. Not to worry, we have oodles of places to satisfy your hunger pangs and meet your budget.

and has been spotted in quite a few locations around town!  I can tell you it makes this jafagirl chuckle! First time I saw one of these was in Washington DC 2009 and I thought it so funny.  Most people don't notice them but I spotted the little blighter straight away. This one is at the crosswalk at Ohio Silver and Downing's Do It Best Hardware Store. Just for those who don't know,  STI(C)MAN gets around and there is even a flickr group dedicated to this little fella.

Who is the artist? Someone called Bob  from Philadelphia .

Architecture a Work of Art in Itself

My friend Karen and I visited the Alan Macbeth’s Oten Gallery Building yesterday. It is now the location for the Yellow Springs Arts Council in the back gallery next to the garden and what a beautiful space. The building itself is a work of art.

There is also a much photographed mural on the side done by Sarah Dickens.

 and if the gallery is closed, sit in the little garden or visit the Asian Collection store at the front.

Axel Bahnsen photographs published

A volume of select photos from the Axel Bahnsen collection at the Wright State University Special Collections library has been published through the Y. S. Historical Society, Y. S. Community Foundation with support from Bahnsen's daughter, Elaine Bahnsen Brown. Paul R. Cooper, author. Announcement will be made at a meeting of the Historical Society at the Senior Citizens center September 19, 2-4 p.m. All welcome.

YSAC Third Friday Fling reception Sept. 17

The Yellow Springs Arts Council presents “By the Available Light,” an exhibition featuring the work of folk artist Sharon Mohler with quilt artist Karen Russell. A Third Friday Fling opening reception will be held on September 17, 6-9 p.m. at the YSAC Gallery, 309 Xenia Avenue.

Mohler’s one-of-a-kind, miniature “sculpted stories” are inspired by her experience as an artist, mother, homemaker, and “handymom.” Fabric artist Karen Russell fulfills her basic needs as she hunts and gathers scraps of cloth that others have discarded to create a little beauty out of nothing.

Gallery hours and flower sculpture demos will be Saturdays, 1-3 p.m., Sept. 18 and 25, Oct. 2 and 9. For more information, contact Sharon Mohler at smmart937@att.net.
