Art is a vital business for many residents of Yellow Springs, yet marketing is rarely taught in art schools, and artists are often in the dark about getting their work into the marketplace. Hoping to shed some light, playwright Kay Reimers has coordinated The Business of Art, a panel and discussion group for sharing strategies. Traditional and non-traditional methods of marketing will be presented by local artists, including Naysan McIlhargey of Miami Valley Pottery and Lisa Hunt of YS Kids Playhouse. Karen Wintrow of the Yellow Springs Chamber of Commerce will also be on hand to describe marketing opportunities with the Chamber. For more information, contact Reimers at 767-8401.

Dennie Eagleson at the Underdog Cafe

The Underdog Cafe, 233 Xenia Avenue in Yellow Springs, is hosting Village People, an exhibition of photographic images by Dennie Eagleson. The exhibition will run until the end of April. Eagleson, a long-time Yellow Springs resident, is a fine art and documentary photographer. The images are close portraits of current and former Village members, made over the past two decades and include some of Eagleson's more experimental work with plastic lens cameras, gel medium transfer, and Polaroid Transfer processes. The images are a celebration of the vitality of life in the Village, and a reminder of the expansive and voluptuous quality of summer light and tastes. The portraits demonstrate how, as members of a small village, we watch each other grow up.

Eagleson exhibits her photographic work regionally and nationally. Her body of work includes projects made about alternative families in Ohio, a micro-loan program for Nicaraguan women, a music school in Sarajevo, and extensive work made in Cuba. Eagleson is a former faculty member at Antioch College. She continues to teach courses in photography and community journalism through the Nonstop Liberal Arts Institute. She is currently offering a series of workshops in Digital Photography through the Nonstop Institute.
For more information, please call Dennie at 937-475-5618.

Elaine Comegys Black Film Festival

I didn't know Elaine, but we always shared a smile, she had such a lovely smile. I do know she was a very special person to many and her death was a great loss to the community (see article). When Nancy and I saw the post office bench (dedicated to her ) looking a bit worn we wanted to decorate it with knit graffiti.

I like to think that she would have appreciated this and enjoyed it.
(we are getting ready to replace it with some new knitted/felt pieces late spring).
"Before she died in November, consummate community woman Elaine Comegys, (shown in the photo above with Barbara Fleming at her left), came up with the idea of a black film festival to jump start conversations about race relations. source: YS News
The Elaine Comegys Black Film Festival 3rd Festival

Little Art Theatre
The movie presentation will be "What's race got to do with it?
followed by an audience discussion.
This event is sponsored by

Film Test Screening: Mark Your Calendars

"Cutting Loose" Film Test Screening
Friday, March 19, at 5:00 p.m.

In early 2002 Joanne Caputo entered the maximum security Graterford Correctional Facility with a video camera, her Vietnamese sister-in-law, and 75-year-old mother. The women passed nervously through the high-security check point in order to enter the visiting room behind bars, but they were most anxious to see inmate John Caputo, their nephew, son, and grandson. More relaxing was Graterford’s art exhibit at the Philadelphia Inquirer, 30 miles away, where John’s wooden miniature prison cell — created from scavenged wood, tongue depressors, pencils and toothpicks — had just won 2nd Place. After more than a decade behind bars — beginning with a teenage auto theft charge — John had become not only a violent prison “scrapper,” but an artist.
The visit kicked off Cutting Loose, a film project that Joanne Caputo would follow for the next seven years, observing art’s ability to rehabilitate her Asian American nephew. A free test screening of the documentary will be held on Friday, March 19, at 5:00 p.m. at the Little Art Theater in Yellow Springs, where a 40-minute version will be shown, plus a brief feedback session with the audience.

Cutting Loose follows Caputo’s On A Roll: Family, Disability and The American Dream, winner of the 2005 PBS Independent Lens Audience Award and recommended by The New York Times; and Ballerina, Ballerina children's video, recommended by Sesame St. Magazine.
