What a fabulous reception, and much thanks go to curator Nancy Mellon and her reception team (Steven Deal, Jerome Borchers, Joanne Caputo, Sondy Kai, Joanne McKee, Corrine Bayraktaroglu, Celeste Lynette Norton-lee) Anna Arbor for her presentation, and music by Ben Hemmendinge.

At the Winds in March: Libby Rufolf & Jennifer O'Brien

Libby Rudolf will have work up at the Winds Cafe for the month of March (March 6-April 1), showing recent work with a painting friend, Jennifer O'Brien.  We will have a Artist's Reception on Sunday, March 11, 4:30-6:30pm.  Please join us!

Congratulations to Village Artisan Pete Mitas

I have been buying Pete's work for a while now from Village Artisans and am delighted to read he won Most Creative Use of Paper Award
at the 22nd Annual Dayton Area Works on Paper exhibition with his work entitled "Urban Scrawl."
Pete fabricated his winning entry by hand-coloring both sides of artist trading cards with bold patterns. He built a structure with the cards which allowed the viewer to see each side of as many cards as possible. The design on each side of a card took 20 to 30 minutes, to do and the structure was completed on and off over a period of three months. The work was completed only when Pete ran out of clips he used to connect the cards together!
The exhibition is open to the public until March 9th at the Rosewood Arts Centre, 2655 Olsen Drive in Kettering.

For Free Art Friday
checking out Karen Russell's studio space
at the United Methodist Church where we hope KAOS (Karen's Academy of Sewing) reigns. I just LOVED seeing how happy Karen is in her new studio room and seeing the stained glass from the inside for a change. Downstairs the sun was beaming in and made
the eye sparkle.
This is the place where the local food pantry is and if you want to leave donations here is their info page
Also they host the Winter Farmers Market until the end of March.

Hum, We're getting all Hippie

Patrick Harney at Cirque Carnival

with Hippie Heritage Homecoming in May Saturday the 19th. A Hippie Gathering of all ages.  Not sure what it is yet, but it's being arranged by Patrick Harney and Mindy (behind Cirque Carnival) so I think it will be GROOVY.

You don't have anything to wear! WELL come visit Yellow Springs, we have oodles of stores selling just what you need ;)
Yes, we are listed in Hippie Havens

And for those that blither on about hating hippies and Yellow Springs, I just want to ask, do you REALLY know what a hippie is? If you do my next question is do you really hate the legacy of the movement? I mean, you're living it man (sez I with a british accent) and eating it, unless you hate Ben and Jerry's ;)  AND I hate to break it to you, but most townies don't really wear tie dyed stuff (it's the tourists you photograph) and the drug thing, well last I saw Xenia had the biggest drug bust this county has EVER seen.
signing off:
one who shaves her armpits, bathes daily, has short hair, doesn't smoke, wears unhippie like clothes (never worn a tie-dyed shirt in my life), but does own a lava lamp

In Honor of Black History Month

BOOK available at Amazon

Where's the Chocolate

It kind of took me off guard that a couple of visitors to town for the Love-In event said they couldn't find the tour de chocolat, so I started asking questions and well, here are just a few photographs.

Adding to the edible kind the jafagirls left quite a few hand sewn free felt chocolates around town.
Me thinks some were NOT looking.

Ohio Same-Sex Marriage Update by Ed Mullen

Sunday, February 12, 2012
1 p.m.
Emporium Wines/Underdog Café
233 Xenia Avenue
Yellow Springs, OH

Lawyer and longtime political activist Ed Mullen, Executive Director of Equality Ohio, will give an update on current legislation concerning Ohio same-sex marriage, on Sunday, February 12 at 1 PM. Located at Emporium/Underdog Cafe, the free lecture is part of the Experience “Love-In” weekend sponsored by the Yellow Springs Arts Council.

Mullen will address the current status of Ohio law, options available for couples to help legitimize their commitments, and what steps are needed to bring equality marriage to our state. Prior to joining Equality Ohio, he was the Managing Attorney for Community Integration at Access Living (Chicago), where he litigated civil rights cases on behalf of thousands of people with disabilities, and advocated for legal and public policy changes at the local, state and national levels. He was also previously a partner at a national law firm, where he chaired the firm’s pro bono and community service committee. In private practice, Mullen has litigated pro bono on several LGBT cases.

Mullen is committed to making Equality Ohio a strong and respected advocate for the LGBT community and its allies throughout Ohio. For more information on Equality Ohio, visit www.equalityohio.org
