This is a show about whimsy and color and poetry and the growth of a deeply creative woman.
This show features Kathy’s 5 charming picture books but it could also be a show about Textile Art, Painting or Drawing.

Kathy has always loved storybooks, Walt Disney, coloring books and cartoons.  As a young woman, in amongst sewing and painting and drawing, she started creating stories.   Along the way she received from many people the gifts of encouragement and the knowledge of how to plan and plot a story.  More life and more years passed and more poems came into her head.  During these years she married, had children, did her art and learned how to be a draftsman, drawing house plans for local builders, using a computer and AutoCAD. She began to wonder about the possibility of painting on a computer.  As with so many of the arts she had mastered, Kathy just figured it out.

“I went back to the rhyme I had begun so long ago about shoes and socks. I worked and reworked
the poem and then planned and plotted my characters and drew my drawings. I scanned them
into my computer. Even though I wasn't even sure of what I was doing, I managed to paint
"You Have to Get All of Your Toes In" on my Mac.
I had figured out this wonderful way of painting, with endless colors and layers for characters and scenery.”

Kathy Verner Moulton is an artist, author and illustrator. Like everything else she has mastered, when she decided to publish her books, with the help of her husband, she taught herself how to self publish. So far she has written and illustrated and published five children’s books. She has also created over 60 images of Yellow Springs that are included in her published book, “My Town ~ the Muses of a Not So Vocal Local”. The work is hand drawn and/or drawn on computer and then painted digitally.

Born in Detroit, Michigan and then transplanted several times, she finally rooted in Yellow Springs and has lived there most of her life. Working in many areas of art, her focus lately has been on picture books.

"Images of koi brings us more than just references of good fortune" states Meredith, "but rather of true abundance....Abundance of grace, inescapable beauty, natural flow, and the connection to all that is, are laid out before us just for the claiming. Abundance:that is our essence." Meredith's work embodies the flow of movement through classical form while infusing elements of many other styles to produce her own unique imagery.

The public is invited to meet the artist at the opening reception on Sunday, July 6th from 2:00 to 4:00 pm., Meredith will give a brief talk and will answer questions.

Art Chat in the Gallery

This Friday is  "Open Critique" at the Yellow Springs, Arts Council Gallery 2-4 p.m.  We are changing the name to "Art Chat"  Even though the sessions have been fun and delightfully laid back, we think that using the word "Critique" causes shudders for some artists (like me!) so we decided to switch. We are inviting anyone to come and talk about art-you are welcome to bring a finished or unfinished piece of art to discuss,  yours or another artists or a link, a tip to share about an artist or art event that inspires you or maybe an art idea that you want to discuss.  We might discuss the work in the gallery or a world wide art trend or art history or an art peeve of ours.  Anything about art that you want to discuss with other artists or art lovers.  Come and relax, bring a drink if you want to, and chat about art.

Arts Council Exhibit: Phyllis' Show

Phyllis’ Show
Photographs by Nance Parent
July 18th-August 10th
At the YSAC Community Gallery
Phyllis’ Show is a tribute show.
It’s a daughter’s loving response to a mother’s wish.

Nance Parent’s photos are very personal and eclectic.  While focusing on taking photos of the mundane, ordinary, normal pieces of daily life, she manages to make the ordinary sublime and the everyday intriguing.

“You should have a photography show,” her mother said to her on more than one occasion. Nance’s mother passed away in January of 2012.  In honor of her mother’s request, this July, Nance is presenting “Phyllis’ Show.“

“She was my biggest fan. She encouraged my photography and insisted that I had a "unique perspective" on the world.  Unfortunately, I never had a photo exhibit during her lifetime.”

This is Phyllis’ show.

Yellow Springs Arts Council: For the Birds Exhibit

Press Release
Bird photography
We have a multi faceted show coming up with photographer Talitha Greene.  Talitha has spent years taking photographs of Birds in the Glen Helen Raptor Center.  She has told me stories about saving a hurt raptor bird herself by throwing a blanket over it and rushing it to the Raptor Center.  You can see her affection for these birds in her portraits of them.  She has learned their stories and what they like and don't like.
This is a quote from Talitha's artist statement: "I do this because I truly love it. When I am taking photos I forget about everything else.  I've forgotten to eat. I've found myself sitting in the dark as the day turned into night. It is true escapism for me. And I love it."

So for her June YSAC Gallery show she wanted to make it a fundraiser "For The Birds."
She planned a very complex show- that mixes in 10 volunteers from Glen Helen ( the Raptor Center is part of Glen Helen) many local artists donating bird art, Terry Fox, a local auctioneer, Meadowlark Restaurant, Dino's Cappuccinos, the Jafagirls, a local blues band and YS Arts Council all donating time and work for the birds.

Call to Artists: Locked In Creative Collaboration

Are you up for a challenge?
Coming-November 2014
“Locked In”
“A Creative Collaboration”
The YSAC Gallery Committee is looking for:
 3 individual artists or a 3-artist-team
And one photographer or videographer to document the process of the artists
Artists from all media may apply.
$100.00 stipend (with a grant dependent chance for a larger stipend) awarded to each artist.
Here’s the scenario:
3 Artists locked in the gallery for 3 days.
3 large boxes of ‘stuff’ donated from the community to use in an art installation
3 artist tools they can each bring
3 phone calls= 1 phone call to a friend by each artist to bring something they’re missing
The challenge: Can 3 Artists, who may or may not have ever met each other before, in 3 Days look through 3 Boxes of random “stuff” that they have never seen before and come up with and agree on a plan together and then work together to create an art installation?  We get to find out in November 2014
(Food will be delivered to the artists and camping style sleeping accommodations will be available at the gallery. Indoor plumbing included.)
Jurying: A selection committee composed of Ohio-area art professionals will jury.
Submission Deadline: Applications will be accepted until August 15th.
Applications can be downloaded from: www.ysartscouncil.org

Or you can pick up an application from the Arts Council Gallery, 111 Corry St. during Open Gallery Hours-Wednesday-Sunday 1-4
