Yellow Springs Arts Council: For the Birds Exhibit

Press Release
Bird photography
We have a multi faceted show coming up with photographer Talitha Greene.  Talitha has spent years taking photographs of Birds in the Glen Helen Raptor Center.  She has told me stories about saving a hurt raptor bird herself by throwing a blanket over it and rushing it to the Raptor Center.  You can see her affection for these birds in her portraits of them.  She has learned their stories and what they like and don't like.
This is a quote from Talitha's artist statement: "I do this because I truly love it. When I am taking photos I forget about everything else.  I've forgotten to eat. I've found myself sitting in the dark as the day turned into night. It is true escapism for me. And I love it."

So for her June YSAC Gallery show she wanted to make it a fundraiser "For The Birds."
She planned a very complex show- that mixes in 10 volunteers from Glen Helen ( the Raptor Center is part of Glen Helen) many local artists donating bird art, Terry Fox, a local auctioneer, Meadowlark Restaurant, Dino's Cappuccinos, the Jafagirls, a local blues band and YS Arts Council all donating time and work for the birds.

Opening Reception
June 20th, 2014 6-9pm
YSAC Gallery 111 Corry Street, Yellow Springs

FAFYes

Meaning Free Art Friday Yellow Springs and the jafagirls have been doing it off and on for about 5 or 6 years now.
In 2008 for 6 months, thanks to the YS Community Foundation support, the jafagirls (and pals) were able to leave between 20-25 pieces of work out each month on third fridays Fling in the Springs.
We're not doing it on such a grand scale now, BUT the tradition carries on, and on any given Friday pieces of art are left around town with a tag that states it is free art to take home or share. So if you are visiting Yellow Springs on a Friday, keep your eyes peeled for a little piece of art with a tag.

Elaine Comegys Black Film Festival

I didn't know Elaine, but we always shared a smile, she had such a lovely smile. I do know she was a very special person to many and her death was a great loss to the community (see article). When Nancy and I saw the post office bench (dedicated to her ) looking a bit worn we wanted to decorate it with knit graffiti.

I like to think that she would have appreciated this and enjoyed it.
(we are getting ready to replace it with some new knitted/felt pieces late spring).
"Before she died in November, consummate community woman Elaine Comegys, (shown in the photo above with Barbara Fleming at her left), came up with the idea of a black film festival to jump start conversations about race relations. source: YS News
