Steel Painting Workshop in King's Yard

Springs Gallery, a fine art/fine craft gallery in Yellow Springs, offered two hands-on painting workshops recently with Dayton artist Mike Elsass. Elsass (wearing a baseball cap) and his students set up the painting-on-rusted-steel workshop on Thursday, September 15, in King's Yard, outside of Springs Gallery. The weather was perfect for both workshops and the protected courtyard provided a sunny and inspirational place to paint.

The gallery is planning two upcoming workshops in two different types of jewelry-making and one watercolor-painting workshop. There will also be a Springs Gallery-hosted workshop with steel-painter Mike Elsass held in Dayton. Stay tuned to this spot for more details or visit their blog at www.springsgallery.blogspot.com.

Springs Gallery is looking for ideas for future classes and workshops -- subjects people are interested in learning about and subjects they may be interested in and qualified to teach. For teaching ideas, e-mail or snail mail a syllabus or class/workshop proposal along with a resume or artist bio with web or blog site, and 3-5 jpegs that can convey your abilities and experience. The gallery prefers to offer workshops (1 or 2 sessions) as opposed to courses (several weeks) to accommodate out-of-town participants.

If you want to be added to the list of persons wanting to be alerted to upcoming classes, contact Christine Klinger at springsgallery@earthlink.net or 937-409-5047.

Springs Gallery is located in King's Yard at 220 Xenia Avenue, Yellow Springs, OH 45387. Hours are Wednesday-Sunday, noon-7 p.m. and on Third Fridays (Fling in the Springs) noon-9 p.m.

THE STORY: It is Christmas in New York, but for two young lovers, Jim and Della, the prospects are bleak, as both are out of work and penniless. But as those familiar with the famous O. Henry story are aware, their dilemma is solved when both part with their most precious possessions (she her beautiful long hair, he his heirloom pocket watch) in order to buy presents for each other thereby creating, at least for a magical moment, an aura of warmth and giving in the cold, impersonal winter city. In addition to their story there are glimpses of various city folk going about their holiday business, and the hilarious plight of a cheerful bum named Soapy, who wants only to get arrested so he can spend the night in a cozy cell, all gracefully enhanced by tuneful songs and neatly tied together by a newsboy-narrator, Willy, who adds his own melodious contribution and informative observations to the delightful proceedings.

Opening Reception tonite at YSAC Gallery

The Yellow Springs Arts Council presents “Veneer—Cover or Disguise,” an exhibit of sculptures, paintings and tattoo photography by artist Chelle Palassis. A Third Friday Fling Opening Reception will be held on Friday, September 16, 6-9 p.m. at the YSAC Gallery, 309 Xenia Avenue.

Currently training as a tattoo apprentice, Palassis has a long standing interested in representations and adornment of the body through folk dolls, masks, and body art. The show explores ways in which these images of the human form have held power and mystery across cultures. Her art is meant to invoke both interaction and reaction from viewers, exposing the true nature within while presenting an attractive exterior. These “cultural veneers” result from layer upon layer of added texture and embellishment.

Extended gallery hours are: Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. September 17, September 24, and October 1. The show will also be open throughout Street Fair on October 8, 9-5pm. Call or text 937-831-2219 for more information or to schedule a private viewing. For more info about Yellow Springs Arts Council, visit www.ysartscouncil.org.
