Yellow Springs Reinvents Itself for Tourism

Reading the history of the town in the YS News articles back in mid 1800's it was a destination for the water cure and brought many a tourist to enjoy the healing waters and "romantic scenery". Prior to that, it was a destination for the Shawnee and other tribes.

It seems the town has a full history of attracting visitors for one reason or another.

Antioch College Artist in Residence: Patricia Cole

Antioch College is pleased to announce that Patricia Cole will be an Artist in Residence from the second week of January through February 17th. Ms Cole is a painter who comes to the college from Bloomington, Indiana, but who most recently had a residency in Johannesburg, South Africa. She will be making a public presentation at the Herndon Gallery on Sunday, January 22, from 3:00-5:00pm about her work and her engagement in different cultures made possible through a range of national and international artist residencies.

Ms Cole will also be offering a drawing workshop to the Antioch and Yellow Springs communities that will be focused on investigating identities. The workshop is free, and will be held on Sunday afternoon, February 5^th, from 2:00-5:00pm at the YSKP Playhouse on the Antioch campus.

Ms Cole has an extensive exhibition record and her work is numerous collections. Her paintings will be on exhibit at GlenHouseArt at the Glen House Inn from January 29th through February 19th. There will be a reception for the artist on Sunday, February 12th, from 2:00-5:00pm that is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Karen Russell and I love thrifting and I found this magazine and grabbed it before she could (we LOVE vintage craft mags). As I was perusing the back pages the words Yellow Springs jumped out at me :)

It was a lovely surprise :)

Yellow Springs Strings was originally owned by Denny Hurowitz and Marina Thompson (antioch alumni) and was located in Goes Station. They sold the business to Corinne Whitesell in 1975 and she relocated it to King's Yard in town.

Banner Festival Revives!

The "not quite annual" Yellow Springs Banner Festival will be hung during the winter months on the banner brackets in our downtown area. All interested persons are invited to make a banner for display. There will be plenty of instruction including our first meeting at the Yellow Springs Senior Center Great Room on Monday, January 9, at 7:00 PM. The organizers will also be available for additional assistance.

A blog is being constructed at ysbannerfestival.wordpress.com. Please check it for ideas, instruction, and dates of future banner workshops. A banner work bee is scheduled for Sunday, January 22, 1-3 p.m., also at the Senior Center Great Room. Two New Workshops with Steel Painter Mike Elsass – in Dayton

Thursday, 1/12/12, 4-6 PM, and Wednesday, 1/18/12, 6-8 PM

Dayton painter Mike Elsass, known for his striking abstract acrylic paintings on rusted steel, has painted and taught throughout the U.S. and Canada. His artwork is represented in fine art galleries throughout the country, including Springs Gallery in Yellow Springs. We were delighted to host him twice outside our gallery this past Fall and he has asked us to host his upcoming Winter workshops in Dayton as well. Mike will once again share his knowledge and materials in two fun and spontaneous sessions.

Painting this time will take place in Mike’s Front Street Studio in Dayton. Students will meet at 16 Brown St., in Dayton (Mike’s Color of Energy Gallery near corner of Brown and E. 5th St. in Oregon District); then you’ll carpool or caravan from there to the Studio. There is no age limit. All materials and supplies will be provided and students will be able to take home a piece of their own creation. The cost is $70 for one workshop or $140 for both. Registrations are being accepted now through the day of the workshop. Forms are available at Springs Gallery and on our site. You may drop off, mail, email or call your registration information and payment to Springs Gallery. Students must have a paid Springs Gallery receipt to receive their materials and participate on that day.

Every Christmas for a few years now I post an image here of Lance's beautiful cards.Local artists Lance and Jean Rudegeair have a Christmastime tradition of walking around the neighbourhood and handing out beautiful homemade Christmas Cards (here and here) based on Lance's meticulous gauche hand painted depictions of wildlife. This year's theme is the Lemur. I was lucky enough to see the original where dangerous drooling occurred ;) and feel blessed to have another card to add to my collection. Inside is always wonderful information.

Porgy and Bess comes to Emporium

An evening of the music of Porgy and Bess, George Gershwin's famous American opera, will be presented on Friday, December 30 at 7 PM at Emporium Wines/Underdog Cafe at 233 Xenia Avenue in Yellow Springs. Premiered in 1935, Gershwin's operatic masterpiece has been performed throughout the world. This concert will feature contemporary arrangements based on Gershwin's original tunes. The show goes until 10 PM. Admission is free.

The ensemble is comprised of Larry Halpern (organ), Mike Teckenbrock (flugelhorn), Mark Smarelli (vibraphone), Erik Greiffenhagen (saxophone), Gail Keen (flute) and Lee McKinney (percussion).

Springs Gallery is offering a one-day jewelry workshop titled “Create a Pure Silver Domed Pendant,” on Saturday, January 14, 2012, from Noon to 4 PM. All levels are welcome.

Explore the amazing medium of Fine Silver Metal Clay. Waynesville, Ohio, artist Trish Jeffers-Zeh, shares her knowledge at a special reduced rate to show support for Springs Gallery and the Yellow Springs arts community. Come learn the dance of working with fine silver clay by creating a simple domed pendant using stamps and molds for textural designs. Experience the simplicity of Metal Clay. It fires with a torch or in a kiln for 30 minutes.

The workshop fee is $50. Materials fee is $40 paid to instructor the day of the class. This fee includes 10 grams of FS clay, use of tools, use of silver syringe and paste, and supplies for firing and finishing. Everything is provided to complete the pendant; all you need to do is add a chain. Additional clay, stones, leather cord and supplies will be available for purchase in class at discount prices. Please bring magnifying glasses if you need them to see small detail work.

Minimum age: 12
Minimum enrollment: 6

The deadline for cancellations with refund is the Sunday of the week before the workshop. Free parking is available behind Kings Yard (off Walnut Street) and on surrounding streets.

YSKP winter/spring class details and Open House

Yellow Springs Kids Playhouse winter/spring term runs from January 9th to May 19th. A new course, West African Drumming, will be added to the roster, along with the New Actors Club, Ballet, Modern Dance, Creative Movement, Hip Hop, Kindermusik, Club Glee, Ballroom Dancing and the Fluid Core (gentle dance warm-up exercises). Early bird discount applies before December 26th.

Sunday night's musical performance of Benjamin Britten's Saint Nicolas was a smashing success. Concert-goer Tom Osborne remarked how wonderful it was to see a packed house.

"The town should be proud that it's got such a living treasure in James Johnston who keeps coming through with one blockbuster after another, using the best musical talent that this area has to offer," said Tom, after describing the evening's event to me.

Applause to the Yellow Springs Community Chorus, Yellow Springs Chamber Orchestra, tenor Vincent Davis, the Children's Choir, the chorus members and musicians and especially director extraordinaire, James Johnston.

From Benjamin Britten to Baha'i inspired singer/songwriter Munirih Sparrow to the Soul Rebels, Dr. Meat, YS Community Band, New Bremen Town Musicians, and the Carol Sing, there was music coming from all corners of our village this weekend. Thanks to the talent for providing such an incredible variety and thanks to participants for your support and inspiration.

On Saturday night, the Little Art Theatre presented a free screening of the 2004 California wine country road-trip movie, Sideways, in celebration of the nonprofit theatre acquiring a liquor license. Movie goers now will have the chance to balance a bucket of popcorn in one hand and a glass of pinot in the other.

I thought the idea of screening Sideways to celebrate the occasion was clever and playful. I appreciate owner Jenny Cowperthwaite-Ruka and the Little Art Board and all the many creative events and fundraising ideas they use to stay financially solvent. We are blessed to have a gem like this in a small town like ours. At the screening, Jenny said how important it is to the nonprofit movie theatre's financial well-being for people to become members. Please consider becoming a member and keeping the Little Art alive and well.

Yellow Springs Brass! will perform a holiday concert TONITE, Monday, Dec. 19, at Friends Care Community beginning at 6:30 p.m. The second half of the concert will feature a holiday song sing-along.

A new member, Molly Finch, is replacing longtime tuba player Dave Triplett, who died in August. Other band members are Bruce Heckman, trumpet; Dave Vrooman, trombone; Steve Vrooman, French horn; and Robert Love, trumpet.

Springs Gallery is pleased to present the ceramic art of James Klinger, and the oil and acrylic paintings of Christine Klinger. The exhibit, titled, “Flora and Fauna—Recent Works of James and Christine Klinger” runs December 16-February 16, 2012, with an opening reception Friday, December 16 from 6 to 9 pm. Both the exhibit and the reception are free and open to the public.

James Klinger, of Yellow Springs, has been working in clay since 1976. He is known for his striking pottery, sculpture, and wall art fired in the raku tradition. Christine Klinger, of Yellow Springs, has been painting nature themes and images in oils and acrylics since 2006. Most recently she has been creating expressionistic landscapes and florals. Christine is the owner of Springs Gallery.

Springs Gallery, located in Kings Yard at 220 Xenia Avenue in Yellow Springs, exhibits and sells a wide variety of original fine arts and fine crafts by local and regional artists. Medieval Christmas Plays at Presby Church

Medieval Christmas Plays, Friday, Dec. 16 and Saturday, Dec. 17, 8:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church.

In December, every other year since 1962, two Medieval Christmas Plays are presented to the village.

The two plays trace their origins to 13th century Germany and are similar to folk plays presented in villages all over Europe at a time when very few people could read. As popular entertainment as well as a way of telling bible stories, the plays were handed down virtually unchanged for centuries. The Yellow Springs version was brought here by a family who arrived from Germany in 1962 and recruited local people to produce the plays.

The two short plays are The Paradise Play and The Nativity and Shepherds Play. The first tells the story of Adam and Eve and their expulsion from Eden, and the second is about the birth of Jesus, as seen through the eyes of local shepherds. The two plays together illustrate the fall and the redemption of human kind. For more information, call 767-7751 or 767-1696

The New Bremen Town Musicians this weekend

Friday-Sunday, December 16-18, Yellow Springs Kids Playhouse presents its biannual holiday show – The New Bremen Town Musicians. Based on the Grimm Brothers fairy tale, the production features a mix of adult, teen and youth performers.

In the story, a donkey, a dog, a cat, and a rooster, all past their prime years in life and usefulness on their respective farms, are discarded or mistreated by their masters. One by one they leave their homes and set out together. The New Bremen Town Musicians is a fun family show of music, masks and holiday cheer. At the end of the play the audience is invited to join in a community waltz in celebration of youth, art and the holidays.

Performances take place on December 16th & 17th at 7:30 and December 18th at 2 at the Glen Helen Building, 405 Corry St. in Yellow Springs. For more information or to reserve tickets, call 767-7800 or visit www.yskp.org.

Award-winning and published photographer Vince Nobel will lead an interactive discussion to explore the intimate side of nature with a one day workshop for macro and close-up photography. This program is designed for beginner to intermediate level photographers with the desire to improve their skills beyond the basics. The main focus will include developing a comprehensive workflow with sound technical and creative aspects to allow for the consistent creation of successful and beautiful images.

Specific areas of discussion will include but not be limited to the following:

Equipment - cameras, macro lenses, tripods, reflectors, diffusers, extension tubes, filters, and best use practices for each.
Lens selection and their various uses.
Camera functions and their creative use in regard to aperture, shutter speed, and ISO.
Composition and lighting techniques for realistic and abstract images. Working with depth of field, background, and selective focus techniques, natural light, and flash
Hands on Photography – Subject matter will be available for you to photograph in areas inside and outside the lodge (weather permitting)
Digital Post Processing of images
Photoshop workflow, camera raw, curves, white balance, cropping, print output, file security and backup.
Additional review of Nik Software, Helicon Focus, and Carbon Copy Cloner.
The overall the goal will be to learn and have fun! Photography is a true art form and a life long process of exploration and learning.

Requirements: Digital SLR Camera or advanced point-and-shoot camera with manual functions required. A tripod is highly recommended. A basic understanding of manual camera functions to include: aperture, shutter speed, iso, and white balance.

The groups will present Benjamin Britten's cantata, Saint Nicholas, featuring guest tenor soloist, Vincent Davis. The cantata is a musical biography of the fourth-century Myran saint, the model for our Santa Claus, and historically a benefactor of children, sailors and those generally in need.

On Tuesday, December 13, from 3-4 p.m., the YS Library presents its Read to the Dogs program. Children will gather in groups and take turns reading to a specially trained therapy dog.

Libraries and schools all around the country have been offering similar programs as the benefits to both dogs and children come to light. The benefits are numerous.

• Physical interaction between children and dogs has been proven to lower blood pressure and reduce the stress that some children feel when reading in front of their classmates.
• Dogs provide a patient, accepting, and non-judgmental environment which helps the child to gain confidence in their reading ability.
• Children with lower self-esteem are more comfortable interacting with a pet than with their peers. By reading to a therapy dog, children are able to overcome shyness and other hurdles that impede their enjoyment of reading and other social activities.
• In addition to the educational and social benefits of this program, children who participate also learn about interacting with an animal. For those who do not have pets at home, this program can teach children about responsible pet care.
• The dogs also benefit from the program. The dogs that are used are certified therapy dogs and must go through some degree of training. Often times, local animal shelters will sponsor the program which not only helps to raise awareness for the plight of adoptable animals but many times trains some of their own shelter dogs to be literary assistance dogs as well.

The dogs that participate in the YS Library Read to the Dogs program are part of the Miami Valley Pet Therapy Association. For more information, go to www.mvpta.com.

Open House Friday at Strong Heart Press & Studio

This past Saturday, local paper and letterpress artist Sarah Strong (pictured) held a Handmade Ornament-Making Workshop at her sweet studio, Strong Heart Studio and Press on Limestone Street. Four villagers took part in the fun workshop, each of us creating our own unique set of mini-lanterns that can be attached to a bulb on a string of mini-lights.

I remember this ornament-making craft from elementary school but Sarah added a contemporary twist. Sarah's workshops are rejuvenating and relaxing. Her studio, set back from the street, is rustic and cozy with a wood-burning stove. She's a nurturing and welcoming hostess. Participants laugh and talk and eat and share stories but sometimes there's long stretches of silence as we each get involved in the gluey, messy, creative process.

I highly recommend her workshops -- for yourself or as a gift. Sarah is a nurturing instructor and consistently presents a project that is very forgiving -- perfect for newbies and those who feel they are all thumbs when it comes to art projects. Whether it's handmade journals or cards, paper lanterns or ornaments, the results are always beautiful. I leave her workshops feeling rested and restored.

This Friday, as part of Third Weekend Fling, Sarah will have an Open House at her Studio. It's a perfect time to check out the space and ask her about her Girls Night Out events. Guests will also have the opportunity to make holiday cards.

Saturday's Holiday in the Springs events included a very talented bluegrass band called Katty Whomp Us, performing at Spirited Goat Coffee House; Santa's appearance at Dunphy Real Estate; and horse-and-wagon rides through downtown Yellow Springs. Thanks to the YS Chamber and participating businesses for all their efforts to coordinate fun holiday activities for villagers and guests.

The beautiful beadwork that has been hanging on a tree in front of the Post Office has been repurposed and restrung on a tree in the Art Park where it can catch the sun's rays. Springs Gallery is offering a one-day jewelry workshop titled “Create a Pure Silver Domed Pendant,” on Saturday, January 14, 2012, from Noon to 4 PM. All levels are welcome.

Explore the amazing medium of Fine Silver Metal Clay. Waynesville, Ohio, artist Trish Jeffers-Zeh, shares her knowledge at a special reduced rate to show support for Springs Gallery and the Yellow Springs arts community. Come learn the dance of working with fine silver clay by creating a simple domed pendant using stamps and molds for textural designs. Experience the simplicity of Metal Clay. It fires with a torch or in a kiln for 30 minutes.

The workshop fee is $50. Materials fee is $40 paid to instructor the day of the class. This fee includes 10 grams of FS clay, use of tools, use of silver syringe and paste, and supplies for firing and finishing. Everything is provided to complete the pendant; all you need to do is add a chain. Additional clay, stones, leather cord and supplies will be available for purchase in class at discount prices. Please bring magnifying glasses if you need them to see small detail work.

Minimum age: 12
Minimum enrollment: 6
The deadline for cancellations with refund is the Sunday of the week before the workshop. Free parking is available behind Kings Yard (off Walnut Street) and on surrounding streets.

Today's Holiday Fest fun starts at noon with a Treasure Hunt to find surprises around town. Check in first at Ye Olde Trail Tavern, 228 Xenia, to get instructions and receive your first clue. Then visit participating stores til 3 p.m. Free horse-drawn wagon rides will start in front of the Little Art Theatre at 1 pm and run until 4 pm. And to top it off, Santa is making a special visit from the North Pole, stopping by Dunphy Real Estate at 251 Xenia Avenue from 3-6 pm.
