"March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb". As the members of Village Artisans were discussing themes for their next Open Community Art Show, they wondered how many different ways the very creative artists of Yellow Springs could interpret this phrase in their work?
The challenge to all community artists is to express your vision of “The Lion and The Lamb” in a piece of 2 or 3 dimensional work for the March/April exhibit in the Village Artisans Lobby Gallery. All are invited to use your imagination and become part of the next gallery show. The spring theme may be interpreted broadly.
The deadline for entries is March 1, 2014. Entry forms will be available at Village Artisans, 100 Corry Street. They may also be found at the Arts Council Gallery, Unfinished Creations and online at www.shopvillageartisans.com. A $10.00 entry fee is requested and there is a 15% commission for any sold pieces.
Village Artisans will host an Artist Reception on Friday, March 21, 2014 from 6-9 pm. There will be refreshments and fun. Exhibitors, their friends and family and the entire community is invited to view the artwork and share snacks and a good time.
Village Artisans has hosted several Open Community Gallery Exhibits in the past several years. “Dare to be Square” and “Bound to be Round” had a great response from the community and have offered local artists a professional gallery venue for their work. Based on this success, “The Lion and the Lamb” and additional shows have been planned throughout the coming year. Look for future announcements.

In the News:Local Family creates alphabet (alphabutts) app

Yellow Springs News

Smiling Family Releases Gassy Alphabet App

“My Little AlphaButts,” an entertaining alphabet app for children created by a fun-loving Yellow Springs family of artists, was released on the Apple Store today. Featuring illustrated letter shapes emitting hilarious back-end body sounds, the interactive alphabet was originally conceived decades ago by Mike Fleishman, a humorous illustrator. He sketched the ABCs for his own sons when they were young enough to enjoy backside images and gusty sound effects. Now they are young men – Cooper, a writer/editor and percussionist, and Max, a graphic designer who turned his dad’s sketches into the 99-cent app’s final color work.
Fleishman’s wife is filmmaker and art project manager, Joanne Caputo, who co-directed the app’s development and lent her former teacher voice to the English narration. A Spanish version was recorded by Benny Vazquez, known in Yellow Springs as the branch manager of U.S. Bank. The family’s app production involved hours of sidesplitting conversation regarding the precise look of 26 different “AlphaButts” and their associated sounds. Also developed was the app’s “Fart-o-matic” that allows users to create their own gassy tunes.
Fleishman and Caputo, natives of Pittsburgh, PA, are the owners of JoJo Beanyhead Co. LLC, creators of the behind-the-scenes “Ballerina, Ballerina!” video for children, and other independent video productions.

Hearts and Snow Red and White at Village Artisans

The delicate lines of this wood burned piece  by Rob Liptak deserve a closer look because my photograph does not do it justice.
I just loved Cynthia's painting. It has this wonderful feel to it, like when you sit and watch the snow fall gently and just enjoy it for what it is.

Village Artisans is located at
100 Corry Street, Yellow Springs, Ohio

Congratulations to Village Artisans member Crystal Heis  who had one of her photographs featured in the Huffington Post and Daily Mail.

Performance Art at Herndon Gallery

On Thursday, January 9th at 7:00pm at the Herndon Gallery, Gabrielle Civil, Antioch College’s professor of performance, will present Aide-Mémoire,  a new performance art work which premiered in November at the AFiRiPerFOMA Biennial in Harare, Zimbabwe.  This festival was the first ever all contemporary performance/ live art festival on the African continent.
Incorporating objects, music and movement, Aide-Mémoire playfully explores the creation and exchange of memory. In real time, the artist will erect her own diaspora memory theater, conduct photo-memory experiments, and inaugurate a memory gift economy with the audience.  Inspired by classical method of loci, tourist souvenirs, Nuruddin Farah’s novel Gifts, selfies and déjà vu, the work becomes a form of new jack memory diplomacy, a “non-paper” manifestation of mnemonics from flesh to camera flash.
The performance is free and open to the public.  For more information, please contact Dennie Eagleson, gallery director, at deagleson@antiochcollege.org or call 937 768 6462.
