Come help sculpt an earthen bench while learning the basics of building with strawbales and earthen plaster. 

The public is invited to watch Holyoke and Seidl sculpt on site using earthen plaster (clay, sand and straw) over Labor Day weekend and through the first week of September. Earthen plaster, less durable than fired clay, will eventually wash away if left exposed to the elements. The artists are fulfilling their desire to combine their work as ceramic artists with their ‘other’ career as strawbale builders.

Inside the Gallery, Beth Holyoke’s fired clay figurative and animal sculptures will be featured along with earthen plaster reliefs that Holyoke and Seidl will be sculpting on site. Outside on the patio, the artists will be creating a figurative sculpture using earthen plaster with the “intention of leaving it to nature to take it back, change its shape and reveal what is underneath the surface”.

Holyoke and Seidl, working as artistic partners, have created three public art handmade tile mosaic benches, a mosaic sculpture made of handmade tiles, and a 1% For Art sculpture project for the City of Kettering. Holyoke has had numerous local and regional exhibitions of her drawings, fiber, clay and paper work. Seidl created a floor mosaic at the Dayton Art Institute to complement the exhibit, Ancient Rome, and has shown her tile and mosaic work in local galleries.

The Gallery is located in the Vernet Ecological Center (formerly the Glen Helen Building) at 405 Corry Street in Yellow Springs. Show hours are 10 am to 4 pm daily.  Admission is free.

Cyclops Fest is back and fresh for 2013! The past two years have been a huge success with a larger than expected turn out, tons of handmade vendors, great food and musical acts. Every year we strive hard to showcase some of Ohio ’s best artisans, musical acts and creative contemporaries. Cyclops Fest is always free to the public and will take place this year on Saturday, September 14^th at the John Bryan Center in Yellow Springs.

This year will be even better with over 80 handmade artists, Festival Beer Garden (featuring Yellow Springs Brewery) kids activities, street performers (Cap’n Johnny Whiz Bang Show), food trucks and food stands including Zombie Dogz and DJ’s (Turntable Philanthropy, Skratchmatik, Philly Phil, Nicky Illiopolis and Mercutio). Located in the heart of Yellow Springs at the John Bryan Center , Cyclops Fest will have something for everyone!

Cyclops Fest organizers are Urban Handmade and Clay + Stan Advertising (located in downtown Yellow Springs) in partnership with the Yellow Springs Chamber of Commerce. Premier festival sponsors returning for a third year are The Dayton City Paper  and WYSO.

Fiber Art Exhibit at the Winds Cafe September and October

Five members of the Yellow Springs Textile Art Group are presenting a group art show. The members, Corrine Bayraktaroglu, Carol Culbertson, Pam Geisel, Bette Kelley, and Sue Rudolf are all local fiber and textile artists who create innovative embroidery, weaving, and art quilts. "Stitch By Stitch: A cross-cultural exploration of contemporary textile and fiber art" can be viewed from Sept. 3 through Nov. 3 at the Winds Café,

Primarily an Illustrator and Sketch Artist, Carol Allin uses pencils, pen-and-ink, chalk or oil pastel in her dreamscape drawings

 

Carol is a self-taught artist.  From the age of five, her world of dreaming, astral travel and regular interactions with nature, animals and sympathetic magic compelled her to attempt sketches of her experience.  She started remembering fragments of other life times from an early age. As a young adult she began an eclectic journey of travel, theater and energetic/empathic healing work that exposed her to intensive cultural Shamanism, which in turn has deeply impacted her artwork.

Artists Selected for National Bronze Sculpture Symposium in Yellow Springs

Yellow Springs, OH – August 1, 2013

 Four national and area artists have been selected for the National Bronze Sculpture Symposium which will take place October 13-26 on the campus of Antioch

College (outdoor foundry area on Corry Street). John Weidman of Brookline, New Hampshire, D’jeanJawrunner of Tucumcari, New Mexico, and Susan Byrnes of Cincinnati, Ohio will join invited artist Brian Maughan of Yellow Springs in creating twelve abstract pieces for a 2014 Bronze Sculpture Trail for

downtown Yellow Springs.

Featuring an ancient practice—bronze casting—dating back thousands of years, but rarely seen, the sculpture symposium will engage and educate community members, students, and visitors. All are invited to observe the artists at work during the day, plus attend a free evening series of related lectures

and presentations that will culminate in a dramatic pouring of molten bronze at sunset on Saturday, October 26. The pour will be supervised by Austin, Texas sculptor and foundry chief Bernie Carreno. On Friday, Oct. 18, an exclusive exhibit of “Maquettes for Large-Scale Public Sculptures” by

international sculptor Jon Hudson of Yellow Springs will open at the Yellow Springs Arts Council’s community gallery at 111 Corry St. The month-long exhibit is free to the public, including an

 opening reception on Oct. 18 during the town’s Art Stroll event at 6 PM, plus a gallery lecture by Hudson at 7 PM.

A recently awarded Ohio Arts Council “Arts Partnership” grant will help fund an aluminum pour by Carreno for Yellow Springs High School students on Oct. 28, culminating a study unit on Public Art; Project Jericho art students from Clark County are expected to participate. 

An additional partnership with the City of Kettering will help sponsor a second aluminum pour for their students the following day.

The National Bronze Sculpture Symposium, funded in part by awards from the Ohio Arts Council, National Endowment for the Arts, Yellow Springs Community Foundation, and an anonymous underwriter, is a Yellow Springs Experience, which is produced by the Yellow Springs Arts Council in collaboration with other creative community partners.

Vintage Goodies at the Atomic Fox

 I got a few goodies, but oh, check out these scissors, I JUST ♥. 

This morning I saw a BEAUTIFUL piece of furniture in my friends house that she bought recently from the store. 

If you are visiting Yellow Springs, it is unfortunately easy to miss this little gem tucked in the back of Kings Yard, but it's so worth seeking it out.
