Rainbow Street Art and Unity

For July 4th in celebration of Yellow Springs Pride and a show of support several local artists created rainbow yarnbombs/craftbombs.
On  Friday July 20th 6:30am a smartly dressed man (locals who saw him didn't recognize him) hacked down all the yarnbombs on the trees with a knife.
Beautiful crochet bird mobile by  Nenee
On Mon 23rd or Tues 24th several more were removed from the metal poles.
Many in the community (and some out of towners) responded Saturday morning. Not with hatred, or anger, but with joy in community, in diversity, in sharing.
Many making and sharing their yarn, felt or beautifully crafted items for all who wished to participate.

Even the garden gnomes embrace diversity ;)
Cutting down the yarnbomb art only seems to have strengthened community spirit.

Trike Snaps and Legs in a Bucket

I got myself a semi recumbent trike all thanks to the help of the trike program at the Yellow Springs Senior Center (they kindly set up an appointment for me to try one out) and the wonderful guys at The Village Cyclery. I have been wanting a trike for several years but never had the chance to really try one out or discuss what type of bike is best suited to my needs. You can be sure it will be given the jafagirl treatment by Nancy and myself ;)
As I was riding around this morning (before the thunder storm) EYE SPIED this
on Pleasant Street and I'm thinking, "hum this may not be such a pleasant street" ;) Anyway whoever did this, I want you to know it made me smile- thank you.

Gifts From the Garden by Carol Siyahi Hicks

Gardening  grows into a book for a local woman Dayton Daily News
cover illustration by Evelyn LaMers
"Gifts from the Garden" probes the subtleties of everyday experience to unearth profound questions and provide observations about our relationship to nature and life. "Gifts" is filled with the love of gardens, the music of poetry, and personal philosophy that is honest, uplifting, and ultimately provocative. If you love gardening or nature, or you are looking for inspiration or respite, this book will bring you enjoyment and, if you are so inclined, even delight."

Where's Mo...?

He is with the YSKP at the Antioch Amphitheater on July 12-15, 19, 21 & 22, starting at 7:30pm.

YS Kids Playhouse will present its 18th summer season of theater by and for youth. As always, the season is centered around the premiere of a new, original musical. This year’s offering, Mo’s Night at the Opera, written and directed by John Fleming, is derived from W.A. Mozart’sThe Marriage of Figaro and the Marx Brothers’ classic film A Night at the Opera. The influences themselves both nod to the Commedia delle Arte roots of pantomime and slapstick comedy that are presented in the show. The fancifully costumed production, with costumes by Ayn Wood, also features live music and period dance. The production stage manager is Victoria Sutton. The production has original music by Neal Kirkwood as well as the music of Mozart, Irving Berlin and the McGuire Sisters. Featured collaborators in the making of the musical include choreographers Debbie Blunden-Diggs, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, Valerie Claggett and Jill Becker. Additional musical direction is provided by James Johnston of the Yellow Springs Community Chorus.

The Mo’s Night Orchestra is a mix of adults and youth, including Elsie Bradley, Brian Bradley, Mary Beth Burkholder, Seth Kaplan, Mike Kremer, Ursula Kremer, Kevin Mulhall, Meredith Rowe and Jenn Wheeler.

Mo’s Night at the Opera is a zany new musical that follows a tangle of relationships both on and off stage on the opening day of an opera. It is performed by a cast of 31 youth from Yellow Springs, Xenia, Springfield, Dayton – and Wisconsin. The cast includes Desiree Lynn Ames, McKenna Banasza-Moore, McKenzie Byers, Sumayah Chappelle, Lorien Chavez, Bella Ehret, Reese Elam, Taylor Felder, Kevon Mathews, Will C. Mitdbo, MacKenzie Moore, Greta Kremer, Jack Lewis, Haley Mapes, Windom Mesure, Lucas Mulhall, London Neal, Tahlia Potter, Meryam Raissouni, Ayonna Sanders,  Eridon Stewart, Nia Stewart, Nia Smith, Dominick Smith, Jonah Trillana, Sharon Tyler, Myah Vanover, Marya Weigand,  Shekinah Williams, Samantha Woolley. The stage crew includes Keegan Chlanda, Christian Elam, Nadia Mulhall, Gabe Trillana and Eli Mulhall.

The YSKP’s 2012 Season is a partnership with the YS Community Chorus and is presented in conjunction with the YS Arts Council’s Yellow Springs Experience series. Information about Yellow Springs Experience events can be found at http://www.yellow-springs-experience.org Supporters of Mo’s Night at the Opera also include the YS Community Foundation, the YS Community Council, Antioch College, the Ohio Arts Council, Antioch Midwest, the Morgan Family Foundation and the friends and patrons of the YSKP.
