Another papermaking opportunity July 16-17
Above are photos from Sarah Strong's Papermaking Workshop which took place at Strong HeArt Press & Studio last Saturday, June 25. Participants Sally Childs-Helton and Cy McQuigg are pictured creating unique handmade paper in a beautiful setting behind the studio at 143 1/2 E. Limestone Street.
My timing was just right to capture the entire process from lavender stems to the sun-dried finished product. The whole experience was other-worldly...a peacefully-paced, pre-computer, serenely meditative creative experience filled with the lush smells and sounds of summer. A Quiet Repose
I popped into Sam & Eddie's Open Books and decided to check out the gallery upstairs.
Getting a chance to see more of Eddie Eckenrode's work was a treat, even more so because the gallery is set up to allow time to just sit quietly, soak it in, and enjoy and explore the work.
Yellow Springs sadly lost a much admired and loved member of the community, but we are blessed he is still with us in his work.
So if you are visiting town look out for this art awning

Best of the Road Rand McNally Contest
The votes have been counted and Yellow Springs has been selected as one of six towns competing in the category of Most Fun in the first ever Best of the Road contest sponsored by USA TODAY and Rand McNally.
Thirty U.S. towns have been selected by popular vote and editors' input from more than 600 nominated communities. The categories include most beautiful, most patriotic, friendliest, most fun and best for food.
Yellow Springs competition for Most Fun is Vacaville, California; Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; Santa Claus, Indiana; Glenwood Springs, Colorado and Sioux City, Iowa. Based upon voter comment, Yellow Springs is a strong competitor. "No chain stores and (many) independent restaurants. Always something going on; on a sunny day you find street musicians or artists,” “Friendly, fun and festive... a small town with a big heart!” and “I'd vote for Yellow Springs in every category if I could. I make the hour drive there at least every other week in the summer.”
On June 23, five teams of travelers will hit the road from New York City, getting into Los Angeles on July 15. Along the way, each team will visit six towns in an assigned category as well as points of interest en route. Yellow Springs is expecting their team to stop sometime from June 27-29.
The Best of the Road teams will be capturing their three-week adventure via videos, photos and updates at bestoftheroad.com. At the end, each team will choose the No. 1 town in each of their respective categories (to be announced July 22). The towns will be highlighted on the Rand McNally website and in the 2013 Rand McNally Road Atlas, as well as on USA TODAY's Travel site.
For more information, contact the Yellow Springs Chamber of Commerce at (937) 767-2686.

Nancy's Notes: Pot Shop Visit
Nancy's Notes
Corrine and I popped into the Pot Shop today, and Wow! They have created a new space up front for a Gallery. It looks lovely. And the work in it is stellar. Everywhere we looked was a gem, from whimsical drawings on ceramic magnets to gorgeous platters with spikes rimming the outside edge. I particularly liked an orange bowl (my favorite color) with wonderful doodles in it. As a matter of fact, it was called a Doodle Bowl by the artist. Corrine fancied a wonderful cracked head with a live plant shooting out of the top. The John Bryan Community Pottery Gallery is open every Saturday and Sunday, 12-4 p.m. you need to go and take a peek.

YELLOW SPRINGS is in the Running for the most FUN town.
YES!!! and it's not just because there's LOTS to do and see, but an atmosphere that allows for spontaneous acts of fun. There are always impromptu moments of fun going on around town, even when running in town to do chores/shopping and there is a fiddler outside of Toms Market, and some gorgeous chalk drawing underfoot. I mean where else would a local police officer actually help yarnbomb a tree, or bust a travelling bra called Olga and stamp her passport for being a public nuisance.
Unfortunately we can't schedule these fun moments for visitors BUT we can other things, so please do check out the links below.
and
friend the YS Chamber of Commerce Facebook Page and get up to the minute news on what's going on around town.

Miniature Show: Marianne Rabb Britton
In- between doing the gum wall fundraiser for the Yellow Springs Arts Council with Nancy on Friday Night Fling I dashed over to see the Miniature Show at IN A FRAME. I'm not sure where the art stops because the hor'd'oeuvres by Current Cuisine were a feast for the eyes as well as the palate.
Nancy had asked if Marianne Rabb Britton was still in town after seeing her beautiful quilts at the Humanist Center at 105 W. North College Street last week. The answer is no, BUT her work still is and she has 5 pieces in the Miniature Show.
Marianne's stitchwork and collage on such a small scale is amazing. Actually there is a lot of amazing work in the show in a variety of media. Check it out and let me know which pieces are your favourite.

Cut-a-thon and more at June 17 Art Stroll
Wavelength Salon Spa stylists Michael Harrod and Gayle Sampson cooled off their clients during the salon's Art Stroll Cut-A-Thon to benefit WYSO. A make-shift salon was set-up outside in the Art Park at Corry and Dayton Streets. A constant flow of customers kept three stylists busy nonstop from 5-9 p.m. while DJ Bobby Lite (aka Robert Hasek) provided the perfect music accompaniment. The salon crew raised $760 in 4 hours and had a great time doing it!
Meanwhile, up on Xenia Avenue, Asanda Imports featured a live painting demo with local artist James E. Harrah who worked on a contemporary portrait of Clint Eastwood as the High Plains Drifter.
